RĂ©gional program for West African fisheries governance improvment
3 projects aim to increase knownledge on shared stocks or shared fisheries

.

DemerstEm

Our projects DEMERSTEM aims to improve knowledge on shared and exploited stocks in ECOWAS area. We will focus on shared demersal species.

Demersal species catches are lower than pelagics one. However these species are valuable and could be considered as patrimonial species. They are also target species for some european fleets operating in west africa (ie : Shrimps fisheries in Mauritania) One other keypoint is the demersal species life history trait (long life and late maturity) and their importance in the Ecosystem trophic chain.

Oui project aims to help scientific advice process in order to improve fisheries managment. The overhall objective is to promote sustainable fisheries in West Africa.

Moreover our project will also work on three other aces in order to go beyond the monospecific approach toward an Ecosystemic Approche for Fisheries :

  • Assessment of sensitive area to prepare spatial planning for fisheries;
  • New technologies to monitor artisanal fisheries (and industrial one fising in coastal area);
  • Ecosystem Approach for fisheries to take into account trophic interaction within the Ecosystem

One other objective is also to develop regional scientific cooperation and skills, especially when working on shared stocks.
